Description
Short for "Super Shock Tip" the Hornady SST is designed to deliver tremendous shock on impact while expanding quickly and reliably particularly at higher velocities. Flat shooting and deadly accurate it's an ideal bullet for whitetails as well as most North American game animals from antelope to moose and similar-sized African plains game. The SST creates a devastatingly large wound channel. Polymer Tip -The sleek polymer tip increases the ballistic coefficient making it more efficient. Upon impact the tip also initiates controlled expansion. Secant Ogive Boattail Profile - It?s a fact: bullets that travel faster hit harder. The Hornady secant ogive gives hunters the speed ballistic efficiency and downrange energy they?re looking for. Cannelure - Provides accurate and consistent crimping and also works with the InterLock ring to control expansion. Interlock Ring - Ensures the core and jacket remain locked solid during expansion so the SST retains the mass and energy needed for dramatic wound channels.

Good for paper targets
I've used these SST 180 gr bullets a few years now. I developed a load for a 2022 moose hunt. I did shoot a moose, both the guide and I thought it was a good shot but no blood trail. Five of us searched the next day, nothing. This is silly after the fact but a year later I decided to shoot that round into ballistic gel. I also shot Nosler partition, Sierra Gamer and Barnes TTXS (multiple get blocks). The Hornady SST 180gr was the worst. The lead separated from the jacket, expansion was 0.45 in, weight of lead&jacket 106gr, shrapnel was 43gr, penetration into 10% gel was 15in. The best...TTSX, then nosler. I decided to repeat the test with SST and TTSX. The SST again separated from the jacket with poor penetration. The TTSX performance matched the first round ie 28in penetration, 0.6 " expansion, over 99% weight retention. So, I use the SST for target practice because they do have reasonable ballistic coeff and more affordable price.
